Our Awesome Trash Chute

Tyler and I decided, after hauling several bags of trash down to the dumpster, that there had to be a better way of getting the ruble from the second floor to the dumpster below. We decided that we needed some sort of trash chute.

We called the local home improvement stores. Nobody carried trash chutes or rented them. So, Tyler and I decided we'd have to make one.

Our first attempt used 8" ductwork to construct a tube to funnel the insulation from the second floor to the dumpster. This worked well till either a chunk of plaster or lath made its way into the tube. Then, the tube would become clogged. Some clogs we could remove with a long stick. This worked until the last clog, we tried using a stick to clear the tube. But, the clog wasn't going to budge. So, we decided it was time to revise our design.

Our second attempt used 6 trash cans. Tyler used a handsaw to cut the bottoms off the trash cans. Then, I used some twine string to tie each trash can to another one till we had a series of trash cans connected by their handles. This setup was large enough that we could throw the insulation down the chute without having to worry about picking out all the lath and plaster. We only had to make sure to pick out the pieces of lath that were over a foot long. This helped us make quick work of all the ruble upstairs.
