Having Fun at Home Depot
On the weekends, Tyler and I make countless trips to the local home improvements stores (Menard's, Lowe's and Home Depot). These trips are always time consuming and tedious. But, at least one of our supply runs this weekend provided a little bit of amusement thanks to daylight savings time and our local Red Cross.
As the sliding glass doors parted and Tyler and I entered our local Home Depot, we were greeted by two very friendly members of the local Red Cross. They were taking advantage of the daylight savings time weekend to remind everyone that this is a good weekend to change the batteries in your home's smoke detectors.
To be polite, Tyler and I stopped to listen as the Red Cross volunteer expelled upon us the importance of replacing the batteries in your smoke detectors. Due to the wonderful condition of our house, Tyler and I currently don't have the luxury of smoke detectors. So, I most certainly did want to be standing in the middle of Home Depot listening to a speech on how I should be replacing batteries in something I currently don't own. But, always on a constant mission to misfortunes into advantages, an idea quickly dawned on me and I put my plan into action.
I leaned over to Tyler, gave a devilish little chuckle and said, "Watch this..."
I then, turned towards the very caring Red Cross volunteer and proudly declared, "Don't worry, we don't have ANY smoke detectors in our home."
The Red Cross volunteer's face was suddenly filled with shock. She couldn't believe we didn't have ANY smoke detectors. So, her "you should really change your batteries" speech became a lecture on the virtues of smoke detectors. She truly believed that Tyler and I didn't see the importance of smoke detectors.
After I had a few good chuckles out of the whole thing, I politely explained that we just purchased a home and were currently in the midst of renovations. And, that part of these renovations included the addition of smoke detectors.
A sudden wave of relief seemed to come over the very kind volunteer and she realized that we'd been having a little bit of fun with her. She chuckled too and said, "Well, just make sure you remember those smoke detectors." And, we parted ways.
So, that is how I turned another rather boring trip to Home Depot into a little bit of fun. :-)
