Reno Vacay - Day 8

Today is the end of our Reno Vacay. And, thankfully we've made it past the drywall finishing stage and we've moved on to painting!

I spent the majority of today turning the master bedroom into Tyler's worst nightmare. Why does it scare Tyler so? Because he's worried the over abundance of purple will cause people to start questioning his masculinity. I have to admit that I too was intimidated when I saw just how purple the room was turning out to be.

The plan was to put a darker shade of purple on the main walls. A lighter shade of purple was to be used on the interior of the arch. Then, I was going to apply a custom tinted brushed pearl glaze over the lighter purple. I didn't know this at the time, but apparently Valspar only makes the brushed pearl paint in certain colors. So, the Lowe's paint counter guy had to try and custom mix brushed pearl glaze to get the purple color I wanted. He made no guarantees about how it would look once it went up because the Valspar representative said the computer wasn't setup to account for the differences between the normal base and the brushed pearl base. I decided to be daring and go with it anyways and I'm really happy that I did!

Like I said, when Tyler first saw the purple bedroom he wasn't too enthused. Then, I started applying the brushed pearl faux finish and suddenly it became a cool purple room - Joe was there and can verify that Tyler liked the purple.

If you're interested, you can click here to see a short movie of me applying the brushed pearl glaze. It is a big file though.

While I was painting the master bedroom, Tyler was working away on the SE guest bedroom. When we were picking out colors, I was worried that he wasn't getting enough of a say in how things were going to look. So, I bit my tongue and told him he could do whatever he wanted with the paint in the SE bedroom. And this experience became another great example of how we're both still different. My preference is for monochromatic color schemes. Tyler's is not. He picked a sky blue for the top half of the room and a light green for the bottom portion. Separately, I love both of these colors. But, I wasn't too sure if I was crazy about seeing them on the same wall together.

Joe ended up coming over on Sunday evening to help us paint. He and Tyler spent most of their time painting the SE bedroom.

The part that drives me nuts about Tyler's color selections is that it gives me the sudden urge to paint a Grant Wood mural everytime I'm in the bedroom. Why? Partially because the view from the room looks just like Grant Wood's Young Corn painting. So, I figured the hills in the room would line up with the hills seen out the window.

Even though I harass Tyler constantly about his paint colors, I do really like the way the room turned out.

The following is the list of everything we managed to get done today.

  • Painted Walls in SE Bedroom
  • Primed Walls in Master Closet
  • Primed Walls in Foyer
  • Painted Ceiling in Foyer
