Trimming Up the Bathroom

Tyler also started putting up the baseboard trim in the guest bathroom this weekend. The worst part of the whole thing? Finding the right stain. Tyler decided he wanted to use the General Finishes brand of stains. I only cared that we either match the light or dark stain on the bathroom vanity or we just seal it like the floor. Tyler wanted the baseboard trim to be a different color than the floor, so that left us with only two options - light or dark stain.

The bathroom vanity we were trying to match was made by Kraftmaid. We plan on putting some moulding up on the matching medicine cabinet that we purchased with the vanity. However, the moulding comes unstained. The nutmeg stain from Kraftmade cost us about $100/quart. While looking at tthe general finishes we saw that they also carried a nutmeg stain. We decided to give it a try to see if it would match. Luckily, it did. The annoying part? The General Finishes quart of nutmeg stain cost $15.

Once we had the stain color picked out, we had to figure out what style of trim we wanted. For the past two years, Tyler and I have gone on the local Parade of Homes tour. One of the trends we saw for moulding was to go with a very simplified Craftsman/Shaker style trim. The best part of this trim is how easy it is to do. Since it is basically a 1x6 board there is no added expense in purchasing a moulding knife or spending time running the wood through the planer.

The end result of all this research into moulding styles and stain colors can be seen below. Isn't the color awesome?
