Plaster Over Drywall... Seriously?!
What is one of the hardest things to demo when renovating a house? A plaster wall that was drywalled over. Slamming the sledge against this immovable object is like slamming it into a very solid stone. There are few things that I've found harder to demo... that is till today...
Tyler and I started bring down the wall between the 'studio apartment' and the kitchen on the main floor. Thankfully, we removed the drywall and paneling on the wall in the 'studio apartment' first before I moved onto the side of the wall in the kitchen. When I swung the sledge into the kitchen wall the reverberations of metal hitting stone rung through my arms and shoulders. Since the back of the wall was all drywall, I couldn't understand what the heck was going on. Using a crowbar for some exploratory drilling, I quickly found that the 1/2" of drywall was coated with a 1/2" of plaster! I stared at it for a moment and just thought, "Are you serious?"
Thankfully, the wall came down a little easier than I thought it would. As I first started to swing the sledge hammer, I was thinking of how much demolishing this wall was going to suck. Then, I started to think of annoying groups from work. Once I narrowed in on thinking of one particularly annoying co-worker the plaster covered drywall bits started flying.
